Due to our very short week, we will only be introduced to the weekly planner this week. Next week you will ask your parent to initial every night in the appropriate "day" column after you have completed your homework assignments for that day. Then you will bring this sheet to school on Friday morning (with your parent's initials for the week) to earn points for your team and a Homework Hurrah Award! You will also begin to use a separate READING sheet this week, which you will also bring in on Friday to be checked and returned. When it is filled completely, you will get a new nightly reading sheet to use and the completed one will be kept in your spiral Reading notebook.
This Tuesday, we will ease into homework with a Math practice sheet and Independent Reading (Parent initial sheet). You will also take your Writing IDEA Journal home to be personalized by you over the weekend. Remember to use stickers, photos, or whatever you wish to make it special to you. In Reading, we will focus on selecting books, thinking and talking about reading, and developing our SQUIRT format in the classroom (silent, quiet, uninterrupted, independent reading time). DRA testing will begin this week. A reading survey will provide Mrs. Hempstead with background on favorite authors and favorite book series. In Math, we will review addition and subtraction facts. In Social Studies, we will begin with Geography and map skills and focus on how to read a map. Bravo to everyone for settling into our classroom with excellent active listening skills and a strong sense of cooperation and helpfulness toward each other. We are off to a great year!
