Math Graph Project
In November, we did our own graph projects. Working with a partner, we decided what to research and then created survey sheets for our class. |
We collected the data and organized it to create a graph which we presented it to the class. |

Campfire Share
At the end of October, we had a simulated campfire story share. What fun! |
Mrs. H. turned off the lights and we took turns reading our scary, spooky stories by flashlight. Our focus this month was building suspense. There were some really great writers in our classroom who gave us the shivers! |

Halloween
Halloween is a whole-school celebration here at Wolfpit. First, we start with a parade around the school. After we returned to the classroom, our generous room parents made certain we had a great party. |
There were yummy treats and Mrs. Ruther brought along a Bingo game. A BIG THANK YOU to Mrs. Palucci and Mrs. Ruther for making our day so special!! |

Math - Working With Place Value
In September, we worked with place value. A number is made of a digit or digits that are assigned a specific value or values (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) to make it the number it is. |
We played Race to a Flat with Miss D'Andrea's class to build understanding of trading 10 ones for tens, and 10 tens for hundreds. What a great game! Rolling the number cubes even helped us to practice our math facts! |

Science - A Visit from Connecticut Audubon
In October, we had a special visit from Mrs. Carol Kratzman from the CT Audubon Center in Fairfield. Mrs. Kratzman talked to us about the food chain and how animals have special adaptations for survival. |
She also brought along her animal friends to show us how the food chain works. We could see the special features each animal has to allow it to get the food it eats. |

Science
September Science Journals |
In September, we began a life science unit by thinking like scientists. However, we discovered that the skill of observation is harder than we thought. It's not so easy to look at something without thinking about it. Take this assignment, for example. As scientists, our job was to observe a patch of ground and record our observations in our journal. We took along a wire hanger to mark the exact perimeter of the ground area each of us chose to observe. Bending the hanger into a rough square, we set up our individual area for observation. We knew our focus was to observe by either drawing what we saw or describing what we saw in words. When we met as a group, we found out that several of us included things that were not really seen within the perimeter of our patch. We concluded that many of us thought it was correct to include things we saw around us if we wanted to make our patch more interesting to write about. This actually made our observations inaccurate and invalid. As scientists, we will work to confine our observations to what we really SEE! |

Team Support
Every two weeks, we move to a different team. |
This gives us a chance to work with different people throughout the year. Names are pulled at random to create a new team. |

A "Writers' Sharing" During Morning Meeting
In September, we are becoming familiar with sharing our ideas with others. We are also learning that we must listen attentively to a speaker so we can offer suggestions, make comments, or ask questions that are relevant, meaningful, and constructive. |
In these photos, some of us volunteered to share our first "letter to Mrs. H." about our weekly reading. Sharing ideas helps us better understand how to improve our own letter writing for next time. |
